About the District 11 Youth Research Team
The District 11 Youth Research Team conducts youth-led, block-level research on small-business conditions and street environments in San Francisco District 11. The project combines field observations with short merchant interviews to identify recurring local challenges and better understand how conditions differ across commercial corridors.
About the Small Business Corridor Study
The Small Business Corridor Study documents conditions for small businesses along commercial corridors in District 11, one block face at a time. Mission Street is the first active corridor. Geneva Avenue and Ocean Avenue are planned corridors where research has not yet started.
Research Purpose
To identify recurring local challenges facing small businesses and to better understand how conditions differ across commercial corridors, study zones and individual blocks.
Methodology
This is an exploratory community research project. It combines block-by-block field observations with merchant interviews. It is not intended to produce statistically representative percentages for all District 11 businesses.
Field researchers record what they see on each block face — storefronts, parking and curb use, cleanliness, safety and disorder, and pedestrian activity — and hold short interviews with merchants. Records are reviewed before they appear on this website.
Research Areas
The study is organized by corridor, study zone and block face. Zones and blocks appear on the interactive map once their boundaries have been confirmed.
